CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR CREATIVE/WORKING PROCESS ?
Even though my artistic activities are different and carried out in parallel, I have a similar approach in both cases, which all relate to sampling — by using what already exists to create new compositions.
In drawing, this involves using collected images (photos, archive images, etc.) that I transform into sort of collages directly in my drawings. I like to play with our visual memory, starting with familiar shapes that I modify to the point of abstraction.
In music, sampling has always been the basis of my instrumental production. I have no musical knowledge and work solely by ear and intuition. Since 2011, in addition to my solo projects, I have had the opportunity to produce a lot of great artists who have influenced me: Rob-O (InI), Shing02 (Nujabes/Samurai Champloo), Mathematik (Down Ta Erf), etc.
IS THERE A PARTICULAR PROJECT YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH US ?
“Play Blue,” my new exhibition from March 27 to 29 at the Galerie Le Petit Prieuré (Paris 11). It's a series of color drawings on paper that I've done over the last few months, which I will be exhibiting during the Printemps du Dessin and during Drawing Now art fair.
HOW DOES YOUR ACTIVITY INFLUENCE THE WAY YOU DRESS ?
The source of my work is always the search for rare and forgotten materials (old books and records) or attention to details that are insignificant.
I think I have the same obsessions when it comes to the way I dress.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CLOTHES ?
The search for difference and rarity, but without being extravagant. I try to find clothes that I feel good in (physically and in terms of the image they reflect) and that I can imagine wearing for a long time.
I'm very inspired by what I've seen in Japan over the last ten years. Not by famous designers or brands, but rather by the way people dress in their everyday lives, often older people, and their attention to fit.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE CÈUCLE PIECE AND WHY ?
The Balloon pants for their volume and comfort. They are an elegant piece that can blend into any outfit and at the same time elevate the overall silhouette.
IF YOU HAD TO DESCRIBE CÈUCLE IN 3 WORDS ?
Subtlety, comfort, and the ability to gather people.
