LAURA "NALA" DEFRETIN

As a dancer and choreographer, I've been rooted in hip-hop culture since childhood. For me, dance is an authentic language, both a tool for personal exploration and a way of sharing my artistic identity with as many people as possible.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR CREATIVE/WORKING PROCESS ?

My creative process is deeply nourished by my daily life. I draw a lot of my inspiration from simple things, from the purity of my children, their spontaneous reactions, their instinctive gestures. Music also plays an essential role: I vary the styles I use to convey different emotions and energies. I regularly visit other art forms, as a way of staying in touch with what's going on around me and broadening my vision. But the most precious moments are those I share with the people I love, those who dance with me every day. It's in these moments, when we practice while having fun, that I really recharge my batteries and that ideas are born naturally.”

IS THERE A PARTICULAR PROJECT YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH US ?

Yes, I'd like to talk about a project that's particularly close to my heart: INTRO, an all-female hip-hop dance professionalization program. Through this course, I accompany passionate young women on their artistic journey, with the aim of giving them the tools, legitimacy and confidence they need to launch themselves as professionals. We work as much on freestyle and choreographic creation as on the more administrative aspects of our profession. The idea is also to create a close-knit group of women artists, choreographers and performers, who draw on the strength of the collective to grow individually. For me, it's a concrete way of passing on and promoting the female talent on our scene, and of shifting the balance in the hip-hop dance scene.

HOW DOES YOUR ACTIVITY INFLUENCE THE WAY YOU DRESS ?

As a hip-hop dancer, style is an integral part of my culture: it's a powerful way of asserting one's identity. But beyond aesthetics, clothes also have a real impact on movement. Materials, cuts, the way a fabric falls or accompanies the body... all this can enhance, amplify or, on the contrary, slow down the movement. So I choose my outfits according to what I want to express visually, the energy I want to transmit through dance.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CLOTHES ?

I've always been fascinated by people who have a real feel for fashion, who know how to put pieces together with taste. I love looking at beautiful outfits, but for a long time I thought they weren't for me. Today, I'm on a quest to find my own artistic direction through clothing. Sometimes it becomes almost central to my preoccupations, and other times I put everything aside in favor of my own comfort. It's an ever-evolving search that accompanies the stages of my life, and even if it sometimes comes along with a little inner struggle, I'm always looking for the silhouette that will make me say: 'Wow Laura, you got this!

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE CÈUCLE PIECE AND WHY ?

My favorite Cèucle piece is the Pants Chapter 1. This was the first piece I tried on, and it immediately met all my essential criteria for moving freely. It's super comfortable thanks to its perfect fit, and it's super well cut, which suits my small figure perfectly. What I also appreciate is the combination of hip-hop style and a touch of class, thanks to the beauty of the materials used. I feel both stylish and comfortable - it's a piece that combines comfort and elegance while staying true to my world.

IF YOU HAD TO DESCRIBE CÈUCLE IN 3 WORDS ?

I'd say “Elegance, comfort and depth”.
