PAULIN BANC

I'm a dancer and performer in contemporary dance companies. I've been dancing since childhood, and it has been a part of my life ever since.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR CREATIVE/WORKING PROCESS ?

My process is based on interpreting, appropriating, and translating an artistic universe. For the past four years, I have been working with the choreographer Nacera Belaza. At the beginning of the creative process, we work in the studio with the body to develop an initial choreographic model. At that point, I feel like a researcher trying to bring out an artistic gesture. As the creation progresses, other elements come into play, such as lighting and sound, for which we are also responsible on stage. With each performance, everything is put back into play. It's as if the story is being written for the first time every time. The creative process is unique to each project. It's as if there's a kind of reset with each new work, and we're researchers exploring uncharted territory.

IS THERE A PARTICULAR PROJECT YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH US ?

I'd like to talk about Nacera Belaza's Les Ombres project, which we're presenting at the Louvre as part of the Festival d'Automne, to celebrate the reopening of the Pavillon des Cinq Continents. I'm accustomed to performing in theatrical spaces, but performing in a museum is a new experience for me. Interacting with the space, which is filled with sculptures from all over the world, and with the audience, who will be seated quite differently to how they would be in a traditional theatre, offers a new framework for exploration. I'm looking forward to this new experience. The project will run from 6 to 18 December 2025.

HOW DOES YOUR ACTIVITY INFLUENCE THE WAY YOU DRESS ?

Dance has shaped my look. It taught me to observe carefully, to perceive the precision of a gesture, the subtlety of a movement, the richness of a material. This sense of detail has naturally been transposed to the way I perceive the objects around me. I realize that, when I buy a piece, I'm attracted by a detail, a meticulous finish or a singular material that arouses my interest. Dance has given me an almost instinctive sensitivity. I'm also lucky enough, thanks to my job, to be able to travel regularly, which allows me to discover new places and unearth unique pieces.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CLOTHES ?

My relationship with clothes has evolved a lot. When I was a teenager, I used to spend my weekends bargain-hunting in charity shops. I bought lots of items, often on a whim, and didn't necessarily keep them for very long. Today, I buy clothes much less frequently. I prefer to choose items that I know I'll keep in my wardrobe for a long time. I'm not a minimalist, but I have a special attachment to many of my clothes as they're linked to memories and specific moments, such as when I found them.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE CÈUCLE PIECE AND WHY ?

I think my favorite piece is the Skirt Chapter 1 Black. There are a thousand ways to wear it: it can be adapted to a multitude of outfits. Its cut, material and style make every look unique.

IF YOU HAD TO DESCRIBE CÈUCLE IN 3 WORDS ?

Timeless, Elegant and Ethical .
