CÉLINE YANG

I am a multidisciplinary artist and I founded Studio Banbogi in 2021 as a tribute to my passion for ancient manual practices, particularly traditional Korean craftsmanship.

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR CREATIVE/WORKING PROCESS ?

I express my inspirations and thoughts through various media and techniques, mainly textiles: hand embroidery, patchwork, and vegetable dyes of organic fibers. I also create installations and objects in ceramics, as well as weaving volumes and shapes in mulberry paper (named Hanji, traditional Korean paper). I use a very specific color palette, working only with neutral and earth tones, which I generally create myself using natural dyeing processes. I also create clothing and accessories in small series or as one-off pieces, which I consider to be the “merchandising” part of my work. They are inspired by my drawings or my designs; or are the result of my research, encounters, travels, and collaborations with other artists and artisans.

IS THERE A PARTICULAR PROJECT YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH US ?

Over the past few months, I have been searching for, collecting, cleaning, and sorting thousands and thousands of antique mother-of-pearl buttons ! I embroider them by hand onto vintage sportswear and oversized shorts, transforming them into one-of-a-kind & ornamented  pieces. I am also working on a series of vintage sweatshirts and hoodies that I have sourced, which I plan to screen print by hand, using a technique involving lemon juice... Stay tuned :)

HOW DOES YOUR ACTIVITY INFLUENCE THE WAY YOU DRESS ?

The constant search for comfort and beautiful fabrics. Minimalist, basic pieces that I can easily mix and match with more sophisticated accessories or some of my own designs. Embroidering by hand for hours on end is quite physically intense ! So to feel good in your clothes that’s the best at the end. And even though I work alone and my studio is located at home, I really enjoy to dress for myself and create looks for the most ordinary outings of everyday life.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CLOTHES ?

I have a rather passionate relationship with clothing ! I like to take care of it. I love finding timeless pieces that match the antique or vintage items I hunt for. Neutral tones, high-quality fabrics, made from natural or recycled fibers (a common thread between my work and my wardrobe). Relaxed, comfortable fits. I love unique and rare pieces, but I also like to have the best basics possible to start from that simple foundation when I imagine an outfit. I don't like quantity or having an overly full wardrobe, so I sort through my clothes a lot !

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE CÈUCLE PIECE AND WHY ?

The kimono that I can wear both as a shirt and as a jacket, layered. And the Curved pants Chapter 4 in Tobacco, which I never take off.

IF YOU HAD TO DESCRIBE CÈUCLE IN 3 WORDS ?

Friendship, Expertise, Timelessness
